EuroSafe highlights child injuries @ EPH2024
Interesting workshop by EuroSafe, EU-IDB EUPHA - European Public Health Association Injury Section and EUPHA CAPH at EPH2024 in Lisbon on child injuries. Data on over 3.6 million home and leisure accidents (HLA) recorded by the EU-IDB (European Injury Database) surveillance system between 2012-2021 shows:
- Falls represent the most common cause of injuries among all age groups (0-19 years).
- Children aged 10-14 have the most home and leisure time injuries of all groups aged 0-19.
- The vast majority of these HLAs are treated in the Emergency Department (ED) but not admitted to hospital (92.9%).
Accidents that occur at home, school and in outdoor spaces are still not sufficiently monitored at EU level. Epidemiological data on the burden of child injuries, such as the data collected through the EU-IDB surveillance system, are necessary to allow governments to prioritize areas for intervention.
